Would be much more fair if they hiked up the price of petrol/diesel and did road toll's. Why sould people that only drive 2-3k miles a year be stung as much as those that do 20-30k a year ??

I agree with most of the polluter pays policies but not like this, its not equally proportioned.

This pissed me off big time when they brought out band G. They introduced it retrospectively, so when i bought my car i suddenly found it had been bumped into a high tax band after i had already purchased it. They claim that this tax is designed to reduce emissions, yet by introducing it retrospectively the people who already own those cars have no choice but to pay. They don't have the chance to purchase a low emissions car in the first place.

There will always be someone willing to buy and run more expensive cars, Rich.... Granted, this may reduce the market for them - which I suppose is what the government wants, if we give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they do actually want to reduce emissions.

As I said above, I don't disagree with what you and Steven are saying. Just that the reality is that it's all of a sudden politically acceptable to tax the out of drivers of "expensive and dirty" cars, and the public at large aren't going to have a great deal of sympathy with us.

As far as the Treasury is concerned, this is just a convenient smokescreen behind which to hide further revenue generation schemes to fund Gordon Brown (Texture Like Sun)'s latest half-baked public spending wheezes.
