They do generate electricity, obviously, but my understanding is that the contribute so little, and can't be relied upon because wind is obviously not constant, that they have negligible impact in terms of generating useful quantities of electricity.

I'm not saying windfarms are the only solution - there's geo-thermal, tidal, hydro, all sorts - as well as n*clear. And they're not that noisy and in my opinion not much of an eyesore, particularly the off-shore variety.
For one, I'm not willing to accept the status quo just because it's too inconvenient to change. It's mighty selfish otherwise.

Problem is, and the reason that no energy company has yet come up with a viable renewable option, is we don't yet have a viable option.
Wind is too expensive and too unreliable, hydro based on inland water flow too expensive and we don't have the land mass to build reservoirs everywhere, wave power again unreliable, tidal needs a huge investement to make it work and would still need conventional generation to pick up the load at slack water. Solar isn't viable in the uk, nor is geothermal.
So what do you suggest we do? Keep churning out CO2 (and there is one coal fired power station in the uk that produces 1/3 of the CO2 that all vehicles in the Uk produce) or maybe build some nuclear power stations that create a fraction of the waste and no C02 until we develop a viable alternative.

Oh .. and a quick piece of info.
If the car is an import with no CO2 emissions, it is a PLG and taxed under the pre 2001 limits (under 1.6 or over 1.6).

Well i know mine is band G and its an import, older than march 01 but taxed on co2 emission because all imports have a compulsary test to pass the SVA in order to be issued a v5 - its why i am thinking about buying a pre 01 4.0 jeep as a beater

I hate to bring even more doom and gloom to this thread, but do you really think this is the last time VED will go up between now and 2010.
If you are your living in a dream world!
They will do the same thing to us next year.
I really really cannot see the next 3 budgets between now and 2010 having no increase in VED!
Time to buy that 1982 V8 monster that does 8MPG and pay no road tax at all....
