Valve Clearances
Hi All,
My mechanic is giving the S a service tomorrow, car has done 65k & im pretty sure the valve clearances have never been checked! Do you think this is worth doing tomorrow? Or would there be no point? i've done a bit of research and it seems they don't need to be checked / adjusted until around 100k, just thought i would double check.

By the way, it's well worth it and there certainly is a point.
I don't have a degree in Mechanical Engineering and I'm not a mechanic by trade, so Ray and Ron explained it to me in layman's terms last weekend before performing the adjustments.
There's quite a dance going on underneath that rocker cover and the valves need to be in sync in order for the engine to perform efficiently and produce the correct amount of power. R&R said something about their purpose being to aid with the pistons' return strokes / expelling exhaust gases etc.. If they're not correctly adjusted, the worst case appears to be that your engine would overheat, which would cause serious damage.
I'm sure someone with a greater knowledge of the subject will be along...
If your mechanic's happy to have a look, get it sorted!

It can definitely affect the efficiency and therefore the power from the engine, if
the information I have read is anything to go by.
I had mine done a week ago at my full service, and I also had it done the year before - overkill maybe
but I rather get everything done and dusted and keep it running nice.
After my full service everything has been running sweet - not saying it's down to primarily the valve
clearances but it all makes it run better.
It's not even that expensive to get done?

To answer your question, it seems any 'decent' mechanic could do it. It depends on what you call decent!
