Up for some new rears so went to www.blackcircles.com for prices. I'm aware of the limitations of the SO2s in the wet, but haven't ruled them out. Also aware that a number of you swear by Eagles F1s. But here are a few others that the blackcircles tyre finder came up with. What do you think?
All tyres are of the correct size and speed rating (either W, Y, or Z) for my MY02 and its 16 inchers. All prices are per tyre, fitted and balanced, at an (as yet unknown) dealer nearby based on my postcode. (I seem to remember reading that the guy who founded blackcircles is an ex Kwik Fit employee. He may have run their "Dial a Tyre" service which was for performance tyres and which I used a couple of times back in my TVR days). The website only gives the address of the fitter, not their name, but it looks from the address as if I'll be sent to a nearby Kwik Fit.

I tediously created an album and gave each image a caption including the price. Guess you'll have to click on the image to identify the tyre and price. Too late now to be typing them all in again.
Particularly interested in anyone's thoughts on the Dunlops, Falkens, Toyos and Yokohamas, ie. those who may have deviated from the normal SO2s or F1s. From reading other threads, these prices seem reasonable.
Although ultimately swayed by the tyres wet and dry performance, I also want the tread pattern to look !!
Had Falkens on the Prelude and Civic and thought they were pretty good as a 'budget' performance buy. Nowhere near as good in the wet or dry as Eagles, but lasted much longer.
I've decided to stick with OEM (don't use the Porsche ones!) S-02's all round too, for what its worth. If I could afford it (they are a lot pricier) I would go for S-03's with a 245 wodth on the rear as, IMO, the grip is as good in the dry and a lot better in the wet with these.
The tyres are all 225/50/16s with either W, Y, or Z speed ratings. As for different tyres front and rear, the answer is yes.
I have no choice. The dealer had fitted new fronts (SO2s) when I picked up the car and with hindsight, I should have screwed him for new rears, but they did seem to have plenty of miles on them. I'm not about to throw away a still decent front set just to have the same front and rear. I appreciate its not ideal but I doubt its dangerous. Would obviously plan to match the fronts when they come up for replacement.

245's will fit on the rear rims with no problem. When I bought my car it had 225 S-03's on the back and was a bit twicthy wiht them. I then had 245 S-03's fitted which solved the problem and fitted aok. I've now gone back to OEM s-02's and the 225 width S-02's (OEM please note - look up some of the other threads on this as it is easy to be sold the wrong ones) fitted on a rim have the same width as 245 S03's.
The moral of the story is either fit OEM s02's in 225 width on the rear or any other type of tyre in 245 width on the rear.
Yes - see Tech FAQ - the pattern on the rear S02s = more contact area on the road. To get this with other tyres you need to go for a 245. It's generally accepted to be the way to go. The fronts have a normal pattern so other tyres on the front are the same width as the S02s.
