I suppose that's one way to run-in tyres 
Seriously, it's best to take it easy for the first couple of hundred miles, as the tyres are coated in a mould release agent and you probably have moulding dimples both of which reduce the grip.
I'm glad to hear that you found somewhere that knows what they are doing. There really is no excuse, but it is down to how much care the operator takes.
