Tyre size?

Tyre size?
i`ve been hunting and hunting and cant get a definative answer
on my 17s, i`m running :
245/40/17 on the rear
i was recommended to run a
225/40/17 on the front.
now i`ve been informed these are a usa sizing and not available in the uk.
So... what are most people running that are running 17" wheels?
do you go down to a 215/40/17 or a 215/45/17?
at the minute the front tyre just looks a tad too chunky (225/45/17), and i`ve a mate in the tyre depot can get me whatever i need, I just need to give him a sizing.
