The S is currently at my local dealer for valve clearances to be done but I was under the impression you would check and adjust the clearances in one job. But looks like I'm going be charged £100 for the check plus the couple hours labour for adjustment.

That sounds right? What are typical prices I should expect to pay?

I would suggest that it shouldn't need the "couple of hours labour for adjustment" - if they've checked the clearances that means they've already got the cam cover off, got the feeler gauges out and slotted them into every valve adjuster, the only extra bit is to set the gap while they do that. There was a recent post where people were generally quoting £100 for valves.
