Avoid.

1) If it looks iffy to you, it probably is.

2) If it's not iffy, it looks that way to you right now and will doubtless look that way to the person you eventually sell it on to. You might well be in the same position a few years down the line except that you won't be able to prove the guy you bought it from was a copper.

3) There will be other cars of the same spec available, Golfs are about the most common sight on the roads and there must be plenty about in diesel with leather, that's about the most common spec of car in our company car park.

I did that with the car I bought from a Honda dealer - the salesman seemed a bit put out

I'd also say "walk" to be honest. Although I know how difficult it is when your potential new toy is sitting there in front of you.

I agree.

General consesus in the office is it is probably stolen recovered and flagged as such on HPI, a fact he is avoiding to tell me.

you'd be surprised by the Diesel GT TDi & leather rarity.
