Default Track day insurance.

Phoned tesco ins (who I'm with) to see if my policy covered track days. Initially the girl at the other end of the line didn't know what a track day was! but said I was covered but I'm not convinced given that she sounded confused. She said I was OK if it wasn't racing??

Anyway the certificate says racing, competitions, rallies and trials are not covered. Does this mean track days too?

Anyway, assuming it doesn't, how much extra can I expect an insurer to charge me? Seen a track day insurance specialist at

Drac, I'm also with Tesco. I had this conversation with them prior to the Hullavington day and eventually got them to concede that since it was neither racing nor competitive, it was not excluded from the policy.

So, you should be fine with them.

did they mention how much extra it would've been had it been excluded?

Don't wanna find out i'm not covered coz of some bimbo who make a mistake. Sounds like I'm OK tho but will phone them again to get it confirmed.

Just wondering if it falls under rallies or trials.

With track day insurance you dont need to take out full value insurance, depending on where your doing it then the chances of a complete right off are very remote. On an airfield day its highly unliklely you do much damage unless you hit someone else, the track day specialist offer varying levels of cover and excess. I usually either took 2000 cover/250 excess or 3000/750 for about 40 with competition car insurance.

You'll find most track day companies insist on no timing equipment as the use of timing equipment constitutes racing which I suspect would mean they would need extra insurance, licences, etc

Tesco's told me that if there was no racing, timing or rallying, then I was covered - just like it says on the certificate. I asked for the guy's name in case there was a problem later and he gave it without question.

I have a business aquaintance who's an ex-director of AON and works for my BoxsterS owning mate. He's more picky and detail obsessed than anyone I've ever met. My mate asked him to check out the competition car insurance cover prior to Hullavington and he concluded, after examining the exclusions and caveats, that it was very expensive and not worth the paper it was written on
