Mike Clements article is very comprehensive (9 pages). I read it on the way to work this morning.
His conclusions: "Power tells you what an engine can do"
A high reving light engine is what you need for fast acceleration.."because smaller, high revving engines have inherently greater power to weight ratios."
Does anyone know of a car with an engine that has these characteristics?
