Very common scam, it worries me that people even entertain these adverts as being genuine. You did the right thing however so just think of it as a lucky escape
Talking about 'entertaining' these scams reminded me of this :

It's a scam.

Why sell a car cheap in England when you're in croatia - just sell it to a croation for the same cheap money.
If you replied to the add through aut-trader expect an email shortly telling you that it was a scam advert and that it has been removed.

Take a look on the for sale section here.
Quite a few cars for that sort of money.
Well This is the wierd thing. I thought the exact same as you guys but have recieved an e-mail from auto trader saying that everything checks out. I text that Reg checker number as well and that says that everything matches up too. The only thing I could think of is that he's just got the car details and pictures from an old add maybe.

This is part of the e-mail from auto trader:

Thank you for using Auto Trader

Please note that this is not a contract and you have no obligation what so ever.
This is only a verification result and we do not mediate any sales.

This e-mail was sent to you in order to assure a better communication between
seller and buyer and also to instruct our customers in how to perform a
transaction in best and optimal conditions for both parties.

Our customer, Mr. Robert Brown, notified us of his intention to sell a vehicle
advertised trough our website. He informed us that he encountered suspicions
from his potential buyers due to his recent change of location, outside United
Kingdom.

We have verified the vehicle details following the seller request and we can
assure you of the following:
...

The above just says that everything matches.
I too Believe that it is a scam but as he only seems to suggest having it delivered to the country i'll suggest I go to Croatia and check his response to that. I cant be bothered with going to Croatia for an S2000 now anyway. I was thinking today and as much as I love the car, there's plenty for sale in this country so why go through the hassle of going all that way to get it. Why not just get it here and then go driving

Thanks all

doesn't matter matey, it's a scam. The people with it will be well aware of what autotrader checks out.

I'd put money on you emailing and him saying "desperate to get rid of it, had people messing me around wanting it but not coming up with the money. large WU deposit and it's yours for 5k"

That's what I got when I enquired about a car in yorkshire, that turned out to be in cambs, except the owner was on an oil rig, so the car was at his friends who needed it out of the way. His friend was away on business..etcetc.

Are you 100% sure that the email came from auto trader.
Because I doubt very much if auto-trader would be able to verify the credentials of a seller - expecialy if that seller is in Croatia.

It's a scam.
Just a slightly clever one.

Being a recent buyer, when I discovered the for sale section here, I decided I would look nowhere else.I got a good idea of what real used prices were and eventually bought from this for sale section. Why even entertain Croatia when you have this forum?I got a very good car for my price range from someone who is a member here and who had obviously looked after the car and proved to be a person of integrity.
