When she started it for me on Saturday Chris, there was no rattle at all.

Timing chain, starter, baby's rattle, nothing.

It does however sound like she has air leaking from her air box somewhere though.
I def need to come up to your workshop

I came across this image which seems to show the guide arms pretty well.
(Two orange parts)
Just for reference, good to see what is being talked about.

Installed this last year.

When I took Yoshi for his 108k service Jorge said it sounded like it might need replacing. I was a bit sceptical as it's only done 9k on the one installed last year.

There is now a loud ticking coming from the engine on idle. Having read up on the link it sounds like a few people have had to replace it fairly frequently

Have I just been unlucky with the part

Any uk people had this problem re-occur? - just a little concerned that it might be something else but if I can get the part for

Yep...this is happening to me at the moment. I've been through 2 TCTs in fairly quick succession.

I'm looking at either timing chain/timing chain guides/oil pump/oil pump chain/oil pump chain tensioner.

I may also have a leaky valve seal on no.4 cylinder.

Is you oil consumption fairly high?

Hi Loft,

Thanks for the reply. Very weird that the problem seems to re-occur so frequently. My first one would have been on the car since new.

Oil consumption on mine is low.

Sounds like you have other problems too - what sort of mileage are you looking at?

83,000. I think my oil consumption and the rattle are related. I'm going to take the exhaust manifold off and see if any of the ports are black first.

Perhaps you'll be lucky, and a new TCT will be alright for alot longer than the last. I know that Billman (US) is very familiar with TCTs, and he has seen more 'NTN2' failures than 'NTN1'. This relates to what is written on the TCT, and when they were made. Perhaps the quality degraded when they switched to NTN2?

I've got suspicions that it will be the timing chain arm/oil pump tensioning arm that is causing the problem as my noise does sound a little more pronounced at the bottom/front of the engine.

Does yours rattle all the way up to 3500 RPM?

I've done a fair amount of searching in 'Under the Hood' and haven't found a definitive answer yet, so I'm going to have to whip most of my engine apart before finding the solution.

TBH don't really notice the rattle unless at very low revs or idle.

Fingers crossed you find what it is
