OMG!!
Mine really was bad, it goes like a fecking rocket ship now.
I can only assume that the throttle never opened fully with so much slack in the cable.

I am actually quite worried about how fast and light the car now feels.
It seems to take a lot of braking now. I have looked at the idle revs and they seem quite normal.
Re-measured the slack properly pushing it down from the centre and its about 5mm.
Like you i cant believe the throttle ever opened properly outside of vtec.

Never known one to snap. I've had three very low mileage S's with throttle cables and they all come from the factory this lose. The tech manual also states a lot of play IIRC.

What happens if/when you run out of room to tighten?
The other end of the cable (down deep in the footwell) has a large alloy button on the end about 1cm across, position the spacer under this.
I used a felt washer 7mm thick ( Dremel felt polishing wheel )cut a slot through to the central hole and pushed the cable through to the centre of the washer.
Small cable tie around the circumference to stop it coming off (trial & error on my part )and you have gained 7mm at the other end for adjustment
