Sounds like some sort of slipping belt to me too.
One of the pullys driven by the belt? Or air pump starting up?

That sounds like the beginnings of sticky starter to me - are you sure your starter button isn't sticking?

How do you know it isn't the starter motor?

Certainly sounds like it to me.

My starter motor had been making a noise for a few years now, so I have a new one, and the noise is different, much higher pitched. Also, the noise is not coming from the direction of the starter motor (so far as I can tell, anyway).

No this is not the old noise, it's the beginnings of that noise starting - sounds like the starter solenoid not retracting properly. That can be sticky starter OR it can be the starter button itself not releasing quickly enough.

I have to agree with UF, really does sound like a slow retracting solenoid.

Bumpstart your car and if it doesn't make the noise - starter motor

If it was a belt, it'd screech.

Starter Motor, mine makes the same sound occasionally, especially when it has been sitting for a few days, been like it last 3 years, has not got any worse

That does sound like it to me.

If the paranoid spring isn't pulling back the pinion, the starter will be turning jet engine speeds at 9K. It'll kill itself dead soon enough.

Possibly it's either dry, or even slightly mis-aligned so it's binding on the flywheel & won't retract. Try taking it off & on again, as they say.

If you give me your old starter at the RR Simon - i'll take it to bits and see what state the bushes are in - if it just needs a clean and regrease i'll do that and reassemble it for you.
