i think i solved the mystery (for the 02 anyway)

the strange light appears to come between the speedo display and the '9' on the revometer... it's light glinting off the main beam indicator...

Yep - but the light isn't flashing and the car is being driven!!

I'm fairly happy that its just the sunlight causing this - but it's a little unnerving the way we suddenly noticed it.

If it's sunny at about 5:00pm - depending on time of year and you are driving towards the east, total internal refraction and polarization will occur within the blue main beam light bulb, however as these beams are now polarized you will only see them if you not looking straight at them as the thickness of your cornea effgectivly de-polarizes these rays......
