Stereo - Mute not working - help!
Hi,
Having had my s2k two years, finally got round to installing a new stereo and tried to wire in the dash functions.
Got an autolead PC99-X61 + the appropriate patch lead + iso adapter
Happily wired it all together (including the mute via the relay) and was feeling very pleased with myself since everything just worked!
... but then when I fired up the engine, something went wrong with the mute - I guess it shorted somehow (?)
I think I have destroyed the mute circuit in the car since the light is permanently on ... Put the stock stereo back in and same problem.
Not so much of a problem with new stero since have just unplugged the mute wire and all is OK (except no mute function)
Is there a fix to this without crazy expense?
Can I get a used part to replace the circuit somehow - if so what do I need, and how do I fit it?
I have currently resorted to some black tape over the light (!)
Alternatively, can I put in a solid non-functional button in instead, or take out the mute bulb?
Although this doesn't really bother me too much, I don't want to draw attention to this when I eventually come to sell it!!!
Any help/advice much appreciated
Thanks!
Angus

Thanks for that, will give it a go when i get time!
I suspect some circuit is blown, so what is the next step if it is - i.e. what does "replace the switch" mean? what part would i need and where can i buy things like this - from scrap?
I have been searching the internet for ages - although i didn't buy a modifry (maybe i should have!) , I found this on modify website ... hope ok to quote and link - apologies if not!

Q - The dash MUTE green LED stays lit all the time, and the MUTE function does not work.
A - This is not a good sign. It usually means the dash mute circuit is blown, which happens if the dash mute wire is connected to a ground or another wire with voltage on it. I've seen this happen when an installer thinks the purple mute wire (in the custom adapter) is a speaker wire and connects it to a speaker output on the head unit. You should immediately turn off the ignition and disconnect the dash mute wire at the adapter, then see if the green LED works normally. If it does, your mute circuitry may be OK, so check your wiring. If, however, the LED is still on all the time then the dash switch electronic circuit board is damaged. It will have to be replaced or possibly repaired. I have been known to repair blown mute circuits so email me if you want to try that solution.
