When starting the car up there is an initial fan noise which lasts for a few minutes then goes off, the blower and/or A/C is not turned on so what is the noise?

Your car will rev higher when cold and at idle, it could be that.

How about popping your head under the bonnet just after you've started her up and have a look?

It's definitely not the engine revving higher, it's quite a different sound to the engine note.

The air pump. For emmisions on start up. Makes a bit of a pop when it turns off after a couple of minutes. Noise should be coming from under the nearside headlight

Yes mine has always done that. It last about a min and then finishes off with a little pfffft - like a little dump valve.

I like it.
