Default Starter motor noise
Search function seems to be fubar - can anyone suggest what to do about what seems to be a starter motor problem please?
On cold startup, I get a short screeching noise as the engine fires - and I guess the starter disengages. Its only started recently as the car has been driven only at weekends

sounds like slow disengagement of the starter pinion. Try removing the starter motor and cleaning the pre-engagement mechanism.

Ah I see.... so for non-mechanics like me, its a trip to the stealers at some point

Mine was doing this, but only when it got fairly cold & had been standing unused for a few days. Hasn't happened in ages.

Yeah - that will work too. TBH it's not an easy job without a hoist
