Default Starter motor does not cut off soon enough

My MY02 has started to do this on cold starts.

It is intermittent but always on cold starts. When I start her, I press the red button for about a second and release it as soon as the engine has started. Recently, occasionally the starter motor does not cut off straight away and of course you then hear the recognisable crunching noise.

I have become a bit paranoid about my own pressing of the red button, thinking that I have started to press it for too long (why I would have started that I dont know ). I now press this button as if it was going to burn my fingers but it still happens when my thumb has clearly left the button and I am grabbing my seat belt by then.

I am sure this is not good for the starter motor. What could be going wrong (I would like to think it is not me after over 3 years of ownership)? When should I start to have this looked into before it costs me a lot?

Mine also does this, its a horrible noise, like a crunch with a bit of a belt noise. Horrible on cold starts...

Hopefully someone will have a good answer.

I see that it has been asked before:

Oct 08

No real answers here either:
July 05

It would be interesting to find out what Jimbob did in the end and if his car still does it.

Chris replaced his in April 08:

I am glad to see that it can be dragged on for a couple of years with the lazy doobly whatsit but my skills mean that it is a definite visit to a dealer at some point.

I would like to know if others have had different outcomes.

Unless it sticks on REALLY long - 5 seconds plus - I wouldn't worry about it.

Yes it sounds horrible, but it isn't doing any damage.

Not sure I would leave it too long like that.

The Woman - good use of the search!

It's dependent on the type of starter that honda have use, I don't know which it is but, it could be the grease on the shaft is thick with the colder weather and the starter cog isn't sliding back as quickly as it should, it could be dirt on the shaft stopping it returning? I would certainly get it looked at as it's easier to sort than the ring on the flywheel, a good indie should be able to remove it and check easily, (I hope, don't really know how it is for access) I'm pretty sure someone must have removed one and know what's what.

Mine does this too, i know of at least 5 people on here who have this issue too.

I think we i do my bushes i will probably replace it with a second hand unit.

Is it likely to cause any longterm damage?
