Default SRS cable reel replacement or repair

Well, after getting the Srs light on my dash some time ago, and ignoring it, I decided I'd better go about fixing it!

I don't have Code reader, but am aware of the srs light reset procedure, but every time I did it the light would go out, only to reappear whenever I touched the steering wheel.

So, something to do with the cable reel module etc....

I set about accessing this often unseen part (see below) by removing the steering wheel and airbag. My advice for such a procedure is: (for 2002 model anyway)

-Disconnect battery (ultra important!) and leave for 10'mins whilst you make tea (remember stereo settings/codes etc)

-Look around the back of the wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock and find the blanking covers on either side, remove them.

-Undo the two torx screws that are exposed (one either side)

-You should be able to pull the airbag out now, but not too far or you'll pull on the wiring. Find and disconnect the black plug for the horn, which is pushed onto a flat tab on the wheel, and look around the centre left at about 7 o'clock and find the yellow push plug for the airbag. As the name says, push the collar forward and it will pop apart. Bring both wires forward so you can put them through the cutout in the centre of the wheel when you remove it.

-Now, turn the wheel with no key in to put the steering lock on. You should now undo the 14mm headed bolt in the centre of the wheel, back it out most of the way, but don't remove it fully (you'll see why next)

-Put the key in, and turn the wheel
Back to dead centre (important for refitting the wheel straight)

-You may find that your wheel wont budge even a mm off the spline (if it does, remove the bolt and wheel - happy days!) Now I'm sure there are a range of wheel pullers out there and I'm sure they work great, but I didn't have one! What I did instead was equally (as in using both hands) pull and sharply butt the back of the wheel at 12 And 6 o'clock, and then at 9 and 3 and the wheel did come forward quite easily, and moves up to the back of the bolt, rather than flying towards your face, pulling the cable reel out with it!

-Remove the bolt, then the wheel taking care to feed the horn and Srs plugs through the cutout.

-You can now clearly see the defective cable reel, but can't remove it quite yet, now the upper and lower column trims have to come off, including the dreaded ignition key rubber trim!

-There are three Phillips screws on the underside of the lower trim, remove them and you should be able to separate the two halves, then remove those from the column.

-Now feel around at the bottom of the cable reel (which spins, in case you hadn't noticed!) and feel out the two plugs. You should be able to remove the one on your right, but the other wire is not disconnected at the reel end. Instead, trace the wire back underneath, and left and you'll see another push plug connection. Once freed from it's retaining lugs (careful not to snap em!) and unplugged the wire has to be fed through a sized eyelet coming towards you. After removing the three - now exposed Phillips head screws you can now lift the reel off column for replacement or repair.

After removing mine, and opening the unit up (it just pulls apart) I found this:

I had an electrician friend remove the sheath and re solder the connection strips, since Honda want over £160 notes for this bad boy!

After re coiling the reel (actually very simple, it guides you) and re fitting all the bits, I reconnected the battery (gingerly, in case my friend made a mistake lol). Tested the horn and performed an Srs light reset procedure, and all was good in the hood :-)

Light comes on for a few seconds at start up, then disappears!

Also, drive the car and make sure the wheel is straight.

Hope this is helpful, whatever you do, don't mess around with the Srs system, or start soldering anything if your not confident, not an area where you want mistakes!
