You'll usually have to remove the alloy wheels, but (without removing the wheels) jack the car up and put acel stands under it, try to rock your suspect wheel at the bottom&top and rock the wheel - there shouldn't be much movement only a wee bit, if any. If theres loads of movement that might be it.
Aslo take the car out of gear and rotate the wheel, whilst doing this listen if there's any noises or scrapes etc.
However make sure you don't have a sticking calliper first

Well, if you jack up the whole rear at once you need someone, or something, to hold the wheel opposide from the one you're working on. It's up to you really as it makes no diff (oh, that's a bad pun).

Sure I heard something about jacking the car on the gearbox filler side so that you can put a few extra 100mls of MTF in there can help with this....

Just had my wheel bearing replaced. It was a grinding noise which turned into more of a squeak the faster I went.
Jack the car up on the suspected side and turn the wheel (I got a small whispering/grinding noise).
The noise will not be as bad as obviously there is no weight on it.
Take it out for a drive and if the noise is more obvious on a right hand turn than a left (or vice versa) Its got to be the bearing.
I wouldnt run it too long though as I wore a step into my hub and had that replaced too.
Stealers should charge around £140ish inc labour and VAT

The wheel bearings have been checked and my local garage seem to think the whine is coming from the rear end of the gearbox
Would anyone have any ideas as to what this is?? Would it be a bearing in there or will I be looking at a new gearbox?
They said they think it is from an area where there is some housing Has anybody had this happen before?

Secondary input shaft bearings would be my guess based on what i looked at on the US boards a while back.

Ultimately? I suppose a failed gearbox when it eventually gives up the ghost. I have NO idea what the various stages are or how long it would last though.
