Default Squeak has a whine

Squeak has a whine that we can't seem to work out where it's coming from.

I thought it was the diff, the noise is what I would expect, even though it wasn't grabbing, snatchy etc.

New Redline oil was put in...no difference.

Another diff was fitted...no difference, the exact same noise is still apparent. If it were slightly different, then you could attribute it to the diff.

It is usually audible > 30 MPH, and gets a little louder as the car goes quicker.

The exhaust has been inspected, and a hole repaired by Squeak herself (she got under the car and everything ) with exhaust tape, which has held firm, but the noise is still there.

A downhill test with the engine off, proved that the noise was still there. It is definitely coming from the rear in my/her's/AE's opinion.

AE suggested that it might be a wheel bearing...short of replacing both, and trying to run at 35 MPH to hear which side it is...any ideas please folks???

mine does this - ive put it down to a thrust bearing in the gearbox - could this be it ? wheel bearing should be easy enough to work out with the car up in the air ?

It sounds like the gearbox, linear bearing. I had the same problem with mine a few years back. Happy to sit in the car (with someone driving) and tell you if it sounds the same. Is it a whine or a rumble? Does it change speed/pitch?

If you can get it on a lift with the rear wheels able to run free, with someone sitting in the car get them to drive in second gear whilst you listen from underneath, if its coming from the rear of the box then its the linear bearing which can get starved of oil.

Cheers Gents

Funny you should mention g/box as the mechanic who changed the diff thought it was coming from the ashtray.

I might be able to get it on a lift in a few weeks time

Otherwise it's axle stands again

Wheel bearing is more likely a rumble than a squeak. The gearbox sounds favorable.

You can fix this by going in via the inspection hatch at the rear of the box however I suspect you still need to take the box out of the car which is the main reason people rarely bother.

Whilst you're at it, there's a number of other bearings that can be changed, one of the American board members did the full job, the thread that links it is here.
