Default Are speed cameras the real problem?

This has been annoying me more than the cameras themselves, but they work hand in hand I suppose.

What gets my goat is the ever constantly changing speed limits. There is a strech of road on my way to work, namely the A24, that goes from 50mph to Nat speed limit, back to 40mph, down to 30mph, back to 60, down to 50mph etc. If you blink you may miss the next requirement, then you can be sure Mr. Fuzz is around the next bend or a blasted camera. When you know the road, you can remember the different limits, but it is that day when you are in a strange area, trying to read a map or look for a road, that you are going to miss the umpteenth speed limit change and get a load of points on your licence!

Gets me real peed off. They have just changed the speed limit in my village from 40 mph which was great, down to 30mph, no notices or anything. So now you come off the A24 at 70mph, down to 60mph for 1mile, down to 50 mph for 2 miles, down to 40 mph for 1 mile (this all still, out in the countryside), you then enter the village at 30mph which is good, but have to crawl for 3 miles back out of the village intro farmland at 30mph. It takes for ever and I have never seen an incident requiring them to change the limits about.

Rant over............

one of my (many) pet hates is when there are roads like this and some folk travel at one constant speed through all of it completely ignoring the various speed limits.

i was on the road up to my sisters yesterday from bishopbriggs to torrance - it goes NSL to 30 to 40 to NSL to 30 etc through some wee village type bits - i joined teh road and immediately came up behind a 1.6 5 door ford focus but we were coming into a 30 so i couldn't overtake - he stayed at about 50 the whole way through the 30 (i slowed down to about 35) - did this all the way along the road.

folk driving like this makes me want to smash puny human soldier men

was also very impressed by the guy who nearly took the front of my car off the other day - i was sitting at a red light and then it changed to green (as they do) - so i put it into 1st and pulled off - while glancing to my left - good thing i did because a bearded & turbaned old guy in a 500 year nissan bluebird came flying through the red light the other way and screeched to a halt a foot from my wing - i displayed my displeaure at this by calling him a variety of names before lighting up the back wheels and pulling off.

doesn't set you up for a good day at work when this sort of thing happens

Some speed limits are becoming ridiculous. Lincolnshire police are really showing that they have absolutley no idea what they are doing.

South of Lincoln a road runs from Navenby to Lincoln. Its a main road, markings etc and was a relatively safe 60 mph. Because there have been a few accidents they reduced the speed limit to 50 mph, not just in one danger area, but on the whole road. BUT if you turn off the main road onto a very tight, bumpy and bendy road with lots of blind corners its a fricking 60mph!!! Wheres the consistency???

The other thing that Lincolnshire police have done is litter the roads with GATSO markings. On one stretch from Metheringham to Lincoln there has got to be between 5 and 10 of these markings. Most people probably think they are a hoax due to the number but Linc police are continually moving mobile GATSO's into different postitions on this road.

Its only a matter of time before they destroy the new A46 dual carriageway stretch from Lincs to Newark with some sort of camera / specs etc.

DONT READ A MAP WHILE YOUR DRIVING! stop and read it.

That A24 is a damn nightmare. And just how long does it take to renovate a central reservation ?

The M8 is another classic for that - 70, 60, 50 on the way in then back up to 60, then 70. I find myself overtaking tons of stuff in the 70's, holding station with most traffic in the 60's then being overtaken in the 50's - except of course when the a$$holes have to slam on their brakes because the joining traffic has nowhere to go because they're right up the ar$e of the car in front and no-one is assessing the situation and altering speed, lane, spacing to keep the traffic flowing and arrrrrggggggghhhhhhhh

IMO, the other problems are:

Speed limits inappropiate to the road. Because we come across safe clear roads with low speed limits, we get into the habit of ignoring those speed limits. Then we risk getting caught (accident or camera) in the areas where there's a real reason for a low limit.

Unclear signing. Speed limit signs should be repeated throughtout the zone. The old rule of street lights = 30mph can no longer be applied with street lights on all sorts of roads. I'm sure repeated reminders of the limit would be more effective in slowing people down.

No enforcement or doing anything about sh1t drivers. Those that drive at 40mph whether it's a 60 limit or a 30 limit. Those that don't understand roundabouts, give way, boxed junctions, those cars in sh1t condition...

You guys are also correct in hi-lighting those other road users with zero situational awareness. They are the ones who need the points!

Also I think the plod, should be cracking down on motorway 'outside lane hoggers', half the motorway is not being used because of these oiks!

Mind you who sees cop patrols these days? Oh, apart from the idiot coppers on the A27 last night who stopped to attend a shunt in the other direction, but decided to park their van in the fast lane, so traffic was backed up for miles in both directions, for no reason. They just needed to go 1 mile down the road to get to the next junction to come back.
