Sound system upgrade
#11
Just go turbo
Thanks for taking it in good humour though I'm not that old - I do have a subwoofer in my car after all! (See my sig for pics)
What sort of budget do you have?
Do not put speakers behind you, as they ruin the sound staging. Money spent doing that would be better spent on a better HU, speakers, amp or subwoofer.
Do you want iPod/USB connectivity (although that's pretty much a given these days)? Bluetooth (although I doubt anyone wll be able to hear what you're saying with that exhaust
A dollar said above, Alpine or Pioneer is pretty good stuff, but it's quite difficult to buy a bad head unit these days. Budget is your main driver.

Happy to help, do have a hunt around for better prices too, and also examine other models the range of each item. Note that the HU doesn't play CDs, so if you want that functionality, choose another Alpine.

I can recommend the Focal Performance series - again from car audio direct. Amazed at the quality and amount of bass from just door speakers and +1 on the sound deadening - makes a huge difference.

I'm no expert. I agree with everything stated thus far. HU and speakers should be changed first. However, if you are really gonna compete with that exhaust you need to make the system louder with an amp. Of course, if you did the amp 1st, it would be loud but still sound bad. So once you have speakers and hu, consider an amp. Alpine amps are good too.

I have just put some focal 165mm front speakers in mine , very nice, a DAB radio next and then a AMP... should do the trick...

Plenty of people use CDs, but it's unlikely to make any difference at resell time.
If you spend a bit less on the HU/speakers, you may be able to get a reasonable amp 2nd hand within budget. It's certainly a lot easier to install it all at the same time.
Slightly cheaper system as follows:
HU: http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-ida-x311.html £130
Speakers: http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-spg-17cs.html £85
Amp: http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-pmx-t320.html £83
or go for the Alpine Power Pack http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-ktp445.html £100
As I say, play around within your budget.

Alternatively, get a 12" full range and 200W amp, mike up the exhaust, invert the phase of the signal and point it towards the exhaust this will cancel the noise of the exhaust and allow you to hear the audio, simples.
But defeats the object of having a noisy exhaust.
and yes I'm slightly older than LG.
