Sound system upgrade
Hey guys,
I want to upgrade my sound system as i have a spoon n1 exhaust and at the level i need to put the radio to hear anything, the quality is just rubbish and it´s starting to do my head in!
I have no idea what i should get though, better speakers or new headunit, would that even make a difference to the sound quality?
Really i don´t want to start messing about with wires and connections so should i just get better speakers?
Any help would be appreciated

A head unit is the 1st thing to be changed. Many people choose alpine. I personally prefer pioneer but either will be a lot better than stock. Both have plug and play connectors and you can also keep the stalk controls with an adapter. Speakers you have to be careful with. The doors fit 6 1/2" speakers but are shallow. There are speakers that slide right in but most you will need an adaptor. Cheap enough or make them like most do with mdf. I have an invidia so the easiest way around the noise is to get headrest speakers. I bought a kit off fleabay to fit in the hoop bars behind the headrest. Work a treat.

Simplest solution would be to get rid of the stupid exhaust!
As has been said loads of times
1) Head Unit
2) Speakers & sound deaden the doors
3) Sound deadening on other areas where the exhaust noise comes from (cabin floor and tunnel essentially) again, simpler to remove the exhaust
4) Amplifier
5) Subwoofer

i have a up-rated stereo and door speakers and my Invidia is still shouting louder,
next week i will be installing speakers in the rear panels behind the seats to aim noise at me from where the exhaust is, should counter act it nicely and make roof down driving more enjoyable. most importantly i don't have to pay the ridiculous price Honda charge for headrest speakers.

I guess i´ll have a look for a head unit then. What do you mean by adapter? Do you know where i can get one?

I´ll look into a new head unit and some speakers, any combination you can recommend?

What sort of budget do you have?
Do not put speakers behind you, as they ruin the sound staging. Money spent doing that would be better spent on a better HU, speakers, amp or subwoofer.
Do you want iPod/USB connectivity (although that's pretty much a given these days)? Bluetooth (although I doubt anyone wll be able to hear what you're saying with that exhaust
A dollar said above, Alpine or Pioneer is pretty good stuff, but it's quite difficult to buy a bad head unit these days. Budget is your main driver.

Putting speakers in the headrest does not ruin the sound if its faded correctly on the head unit. I use focal components (k2p) on both front and rear and they are running off a genesis amplifier. Problem is it depends on what your budget is because they ain't cheap. However you can get a decent HU for £200 and front components for £100. I would start there but if your not happy then amp the door speakers to get a better sound. Once again another £100 for an amplifier. Sound deadening is a must for the doors.

Having only the right hand channel behind your head will ruin the staging, not the overall sound. i.e. you'll hear more of the right hand channel than the left. Not the end of the world of course, but not ideal.
As I said, money is better spent on better HU, speakers or amp.
