What is the OP's point here? Pre-2006 cars were always going to pay £245. There was about a 3 month period where they were going up the same as post-2006 but the government backed down a long time ago.
Too right, to a point..
This is relating to imports, until January this year a pre 2001 car would be registered and classified the same as all other pre 2001 UK cars depending on the engine size. Post Jan '10 imports are now given the "K" tax band which is £245.
I believe and may well be wrong but a 2007 S2K imported today would also be given the K tax band, a damn sight cheaper than the equivalent UK car.

None of you lot have read my first post properly. I imported my car in 2008. Therefore according to the DVLA, even though it was registered as a 2001 car on a Y reg, it was FIRST registered in the uk after 2006. I have always been paying the £405 road tax. My reminder which came through the post 2 weeks ago stated it would be £405 for the year again. I go to the post office to pay and it's £245 for the year. Apparently very few cars have gone down where as most have gone up as normal. Mine falls into the small down bracket, and so does some of yours.
The point i was trying to make is that i have saved £160 for the year, and thats reason to dance!

Youre also missing the point, first registered as new is different to first registered in the UK.
You have not saved £160, you have been placed in the correct tax bracket according to the current system.

Yes but i was never paying new car tax. my car was more expensive because it was first registered here after the 2006 point. If i'd had imported in in 2005 i would've been paying £245 bracket from the beginning. I'm letting people know that they might have the same fortune too if they were in a similar situation to me.
And i did save £160. According to my reminder, i should've paid more than i did.
Usually, i get my reminder, go to pay the tax and it's always gone up slightly.
It's nice to get something back.

No, the rules state that cars registered NEW in the UK after 2006 are subject to the higher tax bracket.
Your car was previously registered in a foreign country so was not new when you registered it in this country, hence you pay the pre 2006 road tax banding.
If youre actually saying they made a mistake on your renewal which was rectified then that would be accurate.
The real pisser is that for example a 1999 S2K imported before Jan '10 would be taxed at £205, under the new post Jan '10 import rules its now £245.

with Giff
I cant see anything about thats factual - the only reason older ie 10 year old or older cars might qualify for lower tax is that they now dont have to go through an esva and therefore an emission check

wording of the dvla is key. it doesnt say new - it says first registered in the uk.

No mate, i've been paying post 2006 banding up until now. The problem is that there was a grey area regarding cars like mine. It's the argument i had at my local DVLA office when i first registered the car. Why should i pay >06 price when my car is a 2001 vehicle? Their answer was that because it's first UK registartion was >06 i have to pay >06 prices. There was never anything to say that, if the car is <06 then you pay xxx regardless when it was imported into the UK.

If they made a mistake then i'm due a refund as i've been overpaying for the last 2 years but i doubt it. It was just a loop hole for them to exploit which has now been closed.
