Default Soft top glass windscreen smashed

I was thinking of going out for a drive today as the roads have finally dried out.

I started putting the hood down, when there was a loud crack as the rear screen smashed. I have absolutely no idea why, there wasn't anything on the shelf & it has never been damaged before.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I'm buggered if I'm paying to have this fixed myself. I rang up garage and they'll assess it to see if it'll come under warranty but I get the feeling I'll have a fight on my hands. Luckily I have witnesses who can verify that I was simpling folding the roof up normally when it happened.

Any advice on how I can make sure it is done under warranty would be really appreciated.

The glass screen cannot be replaced without a whole top.

Very odd mind - I've never heard of a glass screen breaking, plastic all the time, but never glass.

Surely it must be a fault with the folding mechanism. I simply don't see why it happened.

I had this on the Porsche, I don't know whether it was vandalism or from when I had the hood down the night before, came to it and it was shattered.

If you try the insurance route check the policy, I found my hood was not covered (silly I know) I doubt whether you will get a replacement glass part on its own.

Your best bet IMO is the warranty route, work isnt great at the moment for dealers, warranty is still a paid job for them, a job like this may put them on target.

If they refuse just mention 'fit for the purpose' because if you were simply activating the hood via the switch as said, it really shouldnt have broken? Never heard of this before on an S2K

I think you will struggle to be honest with the dealer, how do they know someone didn't put a brick through the window ??

Good luck anyway.

Cheers Lloyd for some optimism.

I can easliy prove that it wasn't vandalism etc as I had witnesses with me as it happened. Luckily we're all doctors so hopefully they'll know it's a genuine claim.

I am confident you will get it through under warranty with minimal hassle

Let me know how you get on, I am interested if they say no, exactly how did they get out of it.

When working at Vauxhall back in 1993 we had a Corsa come in with the back window smashed, we simply fitted another and had the gate painted all under warranty. Vandalism didn't come into our heads. It turned out it was a design fault and they were imploding all over the UK.

I was told by an Autoglass engineer (not just a fitter) that glass can have stress points when made and suddenly one day just shatter.

That's really handy to know - thanks.

I take it in on Tuesday so I will let you know what happens. I can always try several dealers until I find a nice one!

Just checked my insurance and as a last resort they do pay. I quote "We will... Replace the roof and rear windscreen assembly together
if your car is fitted with a folding roof and it is more
cost-effective than replacing the glass alone"
