I have to say that i always find oil threads entertaining. I plan to keep my car for 3 years or so, and as long as i use a reputable oil, i'm sure that i will notice no difference in performance over that time even if i were to use the best oil available.

I have to agree too.

Maybe it's psychological, but it does reassure me that my engine is getting the right stuff, and I can't blame it on the oil if anything goes wrong :touchwood:

One comment about 'fully synthetic' oils is that there're two kinds...and the mainstream, Halfords/petrol station types are the cheaper kind, where you take ordinary mineral oil and chuck in sufficient additives to pass the 'threshold' in the law. But that doesn't make it as effective as the second kind!

There is then the semi-professional, properly-synthetic oil. Oilman will be able to describe it better than me, as I can't remember the relevant terms for each type.

What I WOULD suggest is avoid 0W oils - too thin, a spate of engine trouble a while back on Honda-R caused, we believe, by Mobil-1.

How is it the best?? Its only regarded as the best because Oilman plugs it to bits
actually oilmansi doesn't sell it

I use Redline, based on numerous posts, and some info from Road Rage, and others, mainly on the US side.

I also understand that Amsoil and Motul are good. But as I have always used Redline since changing from mobil 1 then that is what i stick with it is also 10w-30 which i like. Tastes good too

Other plus for Motul is that it smells of bubble gum, so you know when its been changed / pinched by dealer

I agree with Lower and also not using 0 Weight oils.

For most of us a lot of what we use just makes us
feel better and doesn't really effect the motor.

Same with Optimax, Ziano etc!

Bear in mind the 0W is the cold viscosity....

And we all know when wear occurs.

The engine was designed for a higher viscosity some time in the nineties!

I agree ts too thin, just as long as people know its ok once its warm depending on the 2nd number!

Our climate doesnt justify 0W. A lot of the scoob guys change their oil summer / winter, but most of those are in a high state of tune.

None of us really know because we dont use the same oil long term, and dont then strip our engines down to examine wear! Data sheets etc dont tell all the story sometimes.
They do in the States. Hell Xviper, RoadRage et al. send the stuff off to labs before and after it's been in the car
