Soft snow's not a problem (unless you've Toyo Proxes). In fact, it's fun.

It's when it gets compacted into ice that summer tyres are NFU.

Having driven the S in the snow, I find it is the compacted stuff that's worse than fresh stuff.

Whilst the socks sound like a great idea, I will definitely be getting myself some UK 16s and winter tyres for next year

These most likely work in the same way as the method I was taught by my old brother when one gets stuck in mud or snow.

Have a coil of hemp or sisal rope handy, just lay the rope in coils along the ground in front of the driving tyres and slightly under the front edge, and hey presto you drive straight out.

Obviously only useful if you are completely stuck and happen to have a coil of rope handy, but it may come in useful for those with dodgy drives etc.

He learnt that in the Army during National Service, he was in the REME, heavy vehicle recovery.

I parked the 'Lude easily on soft snow. Its weight compacted it & an hour later, it was like a boat with no propellor.
'Lude in "being a barge" shocker

More like a tug boat! With the 4WS it just went round & round in erer-decreasing circles.

BTW; the Dunlop Winter Sports have a BIG thumbs up!

Another old trick (for RWD) was a small piece of carpet secured by a short piece of rope tied to the rear bumper. Place under the wheel which is losing traction, and once your going, keep going!!

We've been selling a lot of these sock thingies at work, had no bad reports back, the company hasn't gone as far as putting a set in each van yet, in fact they won't even give us shovels or snow tyres and we have these in stock.

Dennis, I dare say that works in excatly the same fashion as the rope.

Bit like your sand mats where crossing the Sahara or Gobi, tie them to the rear when alone and stuck, also stops them being shot into the far distance or some ones knees

I tried something similar many years ago on grass and mud (it was also recommended for use on snow & ice), but it did not help.

The formulation may be much better now , however!
