Snorkel + K&N + cooling plate?

Snorkel + K&N + cooling plate?
Really should get round to fitting the snorkel I bought a month or so ago from Gizmo-R.
Having a gander under my filthy bonnet, I discovered some rust
...presumably that piece will unbolt and allow me to replace it?
Now on to the snorkel - do I need to remove the plastic part marked with a pink * ?
Is the snorkel the right way around
Will it fit with my K&N?
Will I get more lovely noise?
And lastly will a cooling plate actually help / cover gap left by removal of * / fit with a snorkel? Any preference on make?

The snorkle looks like a copy. Yes cut a section where you have starred.
A few points...
1. The snorkel will not fit on top of the k&n box unless modified.
2. The snorkle will need to be modified/'thinned out' almost everywhere to fit flush against various parts of the body this is a bit time consuming to get it 'right'.
3. The bonnet will not close without the catch being moved down, or sections cut out of the top or bottom. Also the bottleneck will need removed (top partition cut out and bottom thinned over the bonnet) and both exit and intake mouths enlarged for maximum benefit.
All this together will make a 'small' difference, but watch your IAT's drop like a stone very quickly when booting it - more than stock.
These were old pictures and the design changed slightly and things were improved/finished off.

I'm sure there is a design fault with that k&n. I have one and ended up cutting some off the plastic pipe on the k&n side so the rubber sleeve now fits in the hole in the heat shield and the jubilee clip sits on the other side. I now have no gap between the intake pipe and heat shield so no warm air gets in from the rad. Worth doing in my eyes.

it will be cheaper to remove that part have it media blasted and powder coated than buy one from honda
Could I just sand it down with an orbital or belt sander then repaint it?

Have you got a pic of your modded K&N?
