hmm I thought I had a hose clamp somewhere - is there anything better than this from halfords I can pickup from a shop (i.e. without ordering)?

You are changing the fluid anyway aren't you?
Just be a little bit quick and you won't spill much fluid.
Just keep the lid on the reservoir when you do it and then take it off for bleeding.
