Smelly Clutch
Thought it was going to burst into flames to be honest 
Ok, so holding a hill start for about 45 seconds probably isn't the wisest of things to do to a clutch, but it shouldn't start stinking the place out, surely?
I've often balanced the clutch when in heavy traffic, both in this car and previous ones, and I've never had a problem.
I stopped in at my dealers on the way home because of the smell and one of the mechanics told me I shouldn't ride the clutch - fair enough. I'm in for an appointment to look at some trim after my roof replacement tomorrow so we didn't go into it much, but I've a feeling they're going to insist the fault is mine, if there is a problem with the clutch. I've only had the car since June too (not bought new, it's an 03).
Anyone got any input? If it's down to me, then fine, I'll take it on the chin etc, but I'm finding it hard to accept.

Was one of those situations where you go to dip and put the brake on, the traffic moves a bit further, then stops, rinse and repeat. All on a slip road .

Doesn't work on this particular road in rush hour - everyone on the right is an impatient dickhead who actually needs to be in the left lane but thought they could overtake everyone.
I swear someone actually manouevred in sideways yesterday when I wasn't paying attention and left exactly 1 car length available.

Had a similar instance in the Lakes reversing up a steep hill, but didn't ride the clutch for as long. Started stinking, 1 month later started slipping then new clutch. Ouch.

Will probably be a new clutch soon, if you're really lucky you will have killed the flywheel as well, will have got a little hot with that.
