Out of interest, DVLS say the car is not taxed, but still has MOT till November. MIB database shows it's still insured.
May be worth having a full insurance check done in case there is some kind of error in it's status.

Baffling - mechanical damage could include suspension (driven over a field?) and a ringer will have tell-tales around the VINs.
Maybe it was drowned and has been thoroughly cleaned up? But why if it's sold on as a CAT B, unless a punter got stung on Ebay and tried to insure it?

Body shell should be crushed. Signifies extensive damage, although some parts are salvageable. Should never re-appear on road, although reclaimed parts can be used in other road-going vehicles.
Where did you buy the car from? Private seller?

I don't think it's actually a legal requirement to crush a cat b. It's a guideline.
I think a cat b can be repaired, inspected and reclassified as a cat c or d. You'd expect there to be a mechanism for this for cars with historic or sentimental value etc. Virtually anything can be repaired with enough money and effort.
Adrian flux actually offer insurance for cars that have previously been classified as cat b.

Nick, the car drives straight and true, no obvious leaks from the shocks or snapped springs. Really really baffling. All the vins apart from the one on the bulk head have been removed or scratched out but this is common practice with cat b vehicles. There are some punch marks around the vin tag on the bulk head where it looks like they have started to try and remove it but gave up.
RobinA3, there are some, (very little) but some, circumstances where a cat b can go back on the road. The car was purchased from salvage auction. Cat B vehicles do not have to be crushed. For example we have a Suzuki GSXR 750 that was written off as cat b because it was stolen recovered and had no keys. We use it on the track.
Lower, that's what I'm trying to look in to. I contacted the motor insurance bureau who put me on to another company and I'm waiting a response from them to see if i can try and get in contact with the insurer that categorised it and find out more information as to why it has been categorised the way it is and if there may be a way to appeal it if some kind of error has been made.
