I have found that the only way to get a good colour match with metallics and pearlescents is to blend/feather the surrounding panels. Just painting one panel is asking for a poor match, regardless of how good the sprayer is.

As I understood it they actually paint the panels (well plastics actually) seperately and just bolt them all on to the cars - regardless of when they were painted....
A mate of mine used to work at Honda in teh body shop and he said that the silverstone colour was teh only one you could get away without blending...

I had a Satin Silver DC5 door repainted and front corner blended. No too dissimilar from Siverstone, The painter did a fantastic job and you couldnt notice it at all. It was a top job.
However Im sure Tango and his micron gadget could pick it up

I had a call from the bodyshop, he said that he did make a mistake on the mixing or something, apologised and said it looks better now. I get to pick it up at 5.
Nice to see some honesty and not get fobbed off.
Maybe he should have noticed that it was wrong, but to be honest, as long as it is sorted satisfactorily then im happy.

The finished article is pukka, i have to say. Seems that their first choice of paint manufacturer wasnt a very good match, the second one was spot on. The impression i got was that they bought "honda silverstone" from someone and it was crap, so they tried somewhere else which matched better. He did say manufacturers names but i cant remember them. No need for blending at all.

All bodyshops mix their own paints, they take the code for the paint which tells them all they need to know about mix of pigments and perls to get the right match. Difficulty comes in very slight changes between manufacturers and how well the paint is applied by the bodyshop. Fade is rare as most modern paints have a protective clearcoat, if not there is fresh clean paint to be had underneath the oxidised crud which will polish out.
Bumpers are a little more tricky as a plasticiser needs to be added to the mix to allow the paint to bend rather than crack when pushed.
