Default Silver Lettering On Black Plate

Given the look of my car, the idea of the old-style silver lettering on a black plate is very appealing - certainly for the front, probably for both front and back. Reading the rules, it is only allowed on pre-1973 cars.

However, yesterday I saw one on the front of a black Alfa 156. It looked good. So:
- Has anyone tried this - any views on how the police would react?
- Where could I get some made up?
- Is this a stupid idea?

Thanks!

Yes, it's undoubtedly illegal.

I think it's even more obvious than misplaced spacing etc as everyone expects number plates to to white or yellow these days, so it will attract attention more easily. Presumably your car is dark coloured, so the initial impression will be that you have no plate at all - which is definitely attention grabbing.

Also, I don't expect you will be able to get a legal black and white plate with the BS number/postcode from a kosher number plate shop given the age of the vehicle - even my friendly local high street shop makes me take the V5 and another form of personal id (even though I seem to be n there every week for bits'n'bobs)...but there are ways around that, of course

If you want to do it, then I recommend these people - http://www.no1showplates.co.uk/ - as they're for "show use only" there's no questions asked (they don't have the BS number/postcode on either), you can pay by paypal and I ordered, through the website. at 1500'ish and I had them at 0800 next day. Great quality too

Defo not allowed. Of course nothing to stop you having show plates made but they should not be used on road.

I have seen a few new ish cars one being a range rover sport with a black plate which has had it on for a while, he obviously hasn't been done which is strange as my brother got a fine for a dodgy 7

AFAIK it is illegal.

Does the car have to be pre 1973 or can the plate be pre 1973? All the newer cars i have seen all seem to have a privte plate from pre 1973?

Don't know wether that is correct but worth looking into maybe?

OK, so I am planning to use my show plates on the road (the vehicle is eligible, being 1970), with the potential problem that they don't have postcode/BS number on them.

What does anyone think about the likelihood of being pulled up for that (using it only about 1000 miles per year as well!)

Tell them the plates were made in scotland, not mandatory here yet.

My old balck S had them. Never had a problem with the police. I always thought I would say "My dad has a classic car and has them on legally, I didn't know you weren't allowed them on new cars officer' line of defence.

Looked okay! Wouldn't have them again i don't think.
