Thumbs up Should the speed limit be raised on motorways?

Given a few recent threads on max speed and tickets. Do you think that the maximum speed on motorways should be increased?

Has technology moved on so significantly in the last 30 or so years that we can safely increase the speed limit without increasing accidents?

or do we need to stick with the same limit, even taking technological advances into account, given the vast increase in numbers of vehicles on the roads?

Should there be a more flexible systems such as they have in France to accomodate bad weather?

Should different vehicles have different speed limits?

Should we have a minimum speed limit?

Overall, I think yes - but I think there needs to be a variable system to reduce it in bad weather and round busy junctions etc.

We do have a minimum speed limit for the motorways, but it's only 30mph. There was a proposal to increase it to 50mph, but it was rejected.

I'd have the speed limit abolished altogether, but work needs to be done on lane discipline first.
I think the habit of sitting in overtaking lanes would never have become so prevalent if we hadn't had such a low speed limit. As it is, all three lanes often move at the same speed.

Yes no speed limit would be good. Its very rare for someone to do under 70 on the motorway.

No real surprises on a sports car forum, but I wonder how such a poll would far amongst the Ford Focus and Megane Scenic brigade.

Why? Everytime I go on a motorway people in the fast lane are going over a ton , including me

People concentrate more when driving fast IMO

The motorway speed limits were introduced in the 60s and when first opened there was no limit until the police clocked an AC Cobra at 196mph!! ooops!

The point is these speed limits were introduced when cars had much less technology and took 3 miles to stop! Recently there was a test on stopping distances in the Highway code compared to a selection of modern cars. Most did it in 1/3 and in some cases 1/2 and under the distance stated in the code!!

If there was no limit maybe there would be carnage for the first week till the novelty wore off. Look at German autobarns.......no speed limit and no problems. If it rains or the weather is bad then illuminated speed limits are displayed and EVERYONE OBEYS them. I think this would be where our downfall would be.

I am not sure which one but the RAC or AA have been campaiging for years to have the speed limit raised to 80mph. I don't think there is a car made in the last 7 or 8 years not capable of this and going round most motorway bends at this speed perfectly safely!

Just my 2p

lane discipline is so lacking........imagine approaching someone at a closing speed of 70/80mph and the numpty pulls out in front of you?
