Short journeys in an S2000
#13
i always found lots of short journeys would rinse through lots of fuel. buy a bike-save money on petrol, get fit and keep your car nice.
I don't think many cars like short journeys, apparently the RX8 is quite notorious for disliking them.

I live 0.9 mile away from work and take the S... If i take a shortcut through someones garden i could walk home in 450 meters..
I have a bicyle and an old EK4 civic..
but I always take the s to work! It looks better outside the office than stuck in side a garage where no one sees it..
Come the weekend the car gets a good blast..
As long as there is good oil, i cant see any real harm in short journeys.

We are in the 21st century. Just use it and do not thrash it when cold.
I live on Jersey and most trips no matter where are sub 5 miles. We do not have a car failure pandemic on the island

Why - each to their own with stuff like this, 99% of the rest of the car owning population would say the S2000 was a dumb car to own

My old Alfa 145, RX8, BMW 325i and now my S2000 have all undergone the exact same journey as you have stated. A couple of my previous cars you could call precious or even fragile; but they were absolutely fine and didn't miss a beat with the short journeys, and my S2000 is coping just fine the same journey.
I'd actually bet most S2000 owners that are not enthusiasts will use the car in this manner with no issues anyway.
Like everyone has said, if you take her for a good blast every so often to clean out the cobwebs from the valves then it'll be reet - but that should go without saying, otherwise you wouldn't own an S2000, right?
Good point, although its not that cars don't "like" short journeys and therefore rinse the fuel, its just that all the ECU wants to do is get the engine warm as quick as possible, and so it will run rich with the choke fully out, until warm. By the time you've done your 3.5 miles, you'll be up to optimum temp, but won't be using it any further and therefore not reaping the rewards.
My RX8 was aaaawwwwfuul for my 3.5 mile journey to work, and I mean woeful! Talking around 10mpg - but its only because it wanted to get warm and also the engine design (Rotary) wasn't an economical one anyway. When cold it would idle at 3000rpm, warm it would be 1200rpm. I notice our S2000's hover around the 2500rpm mark when cold too.
What he said; literally 'pootle' to work so every part is still getting plenty of oil during the journey; its only when you thrash your engine with cold parts and insufficient oil feed (because the oil is cold too) do you do real damage. Taking it easy will also help negate the ECU's cat-like ambition to be roasting hot!
Overall, she'll be fine!

Worst case is you build water up in the exhaust which rots it from the inside out and it builds up fuel in the oil as its always running rich when cold, it's not good for the cat either
Change the oil more often and give it a good thrashing (Italian tune up)at weekend s and it will be fine
