shipping S2K to Ireland
Hey everyone.
I just wanted to see if anyone here could help me out with brining my S2K from the states to dublin.
I'm off to UC Dublin for medical school and figured I should bring my car over if it's not too expensive.
Does anyone have any experience with registering a foreign car in Dublin?
How about getting a driver's license?
Thanks
Sumir

The simple answer is don't try reg an s2k here it will cost between €4000 to €42000 depending on the year i'd imagining shipping would be a couple of thousand at least. Honestly unless your staying for more than 2 years it's going to cost a fortune

There was a way to bypass the vehicle registration tax if you owned the car for more than 6 months when you lived abroad but I think they tried to close that loophole. Try www.revenueonline.ie and look for the section on VRT

Sorry for previous posts these damn phones aren't really that great at the internet lol
This is what your looking for http://www.vrt.ie/vrtDetail.php?page=21
As for your licence I'd take it as it goes

From the sounds of it, you would be better off saving your sheckles and buying an S2K when you arrive in Ireland.

They try to make it as awkward as possible for you so you don't bother with it, I know a lad from Killarney who brought his S back from the Uk and did it. He said the vrt guy was sound though which helps, the idiots in Limerick have the worst people skills ever. I'd think the government trains there employees to be shites!
On a side note a lhd on rhd made roads would be annoying but you get used to it.

If your a student then i dont think you need to register it here:
according to No.4 here http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/leaflets/vrt2.html
If you reside temporarily in the State primarily for the purpose of pursuing a course of studies you may bring a foreign registered Category A vehicle (see definition in paragraph 5) or a motor-cycle into the State provided it is registered in the country of your normal residence. The same conditions mentioned in paragraph 2 above apply and the 12 month time limit will be extended until you have completed your course of studies.
How the insurance would work then I dont know, would your current insurer insure you in Ireland?

Wow Thanks for all the help.
I will be there for 4 years.
I have pretty good insurance I would just have to check to see if I am covered.
I looked into companies that could ship my car and it's wasn't that expensive. The only problems now are getting a license and do I even need a car while in Dublin
Just that the thought of leaving my car for 4 years is heartbreaking

Do you know where you will be staying yet?
The city centre has pretty decent public transport system and with a 30kmph speed limit in certain parts a car could be more hassle than its worth.
Try Dublin transport network
Although
Within 25 minutes of the the city centre is this
The Wicklow Mountains
There are many great roads within an hour of Dublin and some incredible driving roads all across the country. So if you do ship the car over give me a shout
Getting a Licence should not be that hard
