Why would the starter motor still make a noise after the engine has started and speed up when the revs raise?

If it's doing that, then it's not the starter motor. The starter motor makes a brief crunch (like you've accidentally pressed the button for too long) and then it goes away.

Possibly the starter gear is engaging, but not disengaging fully when the starter button is released, so the engine is actually driving the motor, hence the noise?

mine's just started doing it too...glad someone brought it up as i was beginning to wonder if i was going to have to spend even more money in addition to the new hood, rust on the wheel arch and new brakes!!!

I do this out of love i'm sure....sanity, no!

Sounds mad but if the aux multi V belt try a small blob of grease on the V's. Same with old fashioned V belts.

Since there's an auto-tensioner (makes changing it easy!) your belt shouldn't be screeching like an old Astravan & needs changing urgently.

Mind you, the bearing on the autotensioner can screech if it goes dry - usually at high RPM & WD40 makes it go away.

Thanks for all the help guys, just wanted to narrow down the list of possibilities, i think that its the belt, car has done 76k now, so will change that first, and go from there
