S2k Replacement .........

Owned a Cooper S for nearly 2 years before the S2000. Rear leg room is crap and the boot is ridiculously small, so you can almost forget the practicality arguement
Performance wise I always found it disappointing until I added the Hartge 210 bhp upgrade package (

If you check out the mini forums then you'll be amazed how the MCS owners there are only getting 22mpg from a 1.6L They are stylish but I found them really heeeaaaavvy round the bends (loads more than my Type R) although the understeer was non existent (wierd). Practi.... what ?? Definitely a car that I wanted to love but I ended up feeling indifferent.
Replacing the 2000 is a difficult one IMO as you don't get many cars with S's reliability, quality, minimal depreciation and style for a reasonable price. The Civic Type R springs to mind (appart from the style bit maybe) but as you've said they're off the list.
Personally I'd consider an IS200, Celica, Accord Type S, DC5 Teg or RX8 although the Accord seems to be dropping money the quickest (good news for me though as it'll probably be my next purchase).
Cheers

Be careful not to downgrade too much, did this myself when I brought a VW Golf GT TDI (130). The novelty of cheap motoring was great at first, but it wore off fairly quickly. I think I managed 9 months
The Mini IMHO is a girl car, only see a bloke in about 1 in 10 I would say, but they are so common now they no longer catch my eye.

I wouldn't have replaced my Saxo VTS with a Cooper S, never mind my S2000!
They're very slow considering the bhp and the fact it's a small car.
I'd look at a Clio Cup.

Thanks guys for all your feedback !!
I dont know what came over me,
but Ive now decided to keep the S !
The whole exercise was for the purpose of expense cutting
but, the more I thought about the Cooper, the more it didnt really make much rational sense. Alright, after the initial purchase cost (a whoping 17k) I'd have a few quid in my pocket - but I dont think it would have made THAT much difference in running costs. Only

Test drove a standard Cupra for a long weekend. Compared to the S it handled like a bus. Very little steering feel. I expect it was quicker than the S in the wet, but I had zero confidence in it's grip and feedback.
Cupra R may be different, but the arses at Seat couldn't even find us one to test drive until about 4 months later.
By comparison CTR was much better.
