Think it's flywheel Si. The real world power of the S2000 is about 15-20 bhp below quoted on most dynos.

220 at the wheels would be a very powerful S2000. I think mine's around 212.

Well they probably managed them on a bench dyno with 100 ron fuel or something But Dyno Dynamics rolling roads tend to give about 180-190 bhp at the wheels on a standard car.

My '56 gradually lost the VRTC kick, I did an ECU reset and took it out for a thrashing and got the kick back, I think the ECU had adapted the fuleing to some less than spirted driving. Worth a try.

Yep. My MY00 is dead linear too. The ECU reset has to be worth a try though. I have an accord type R and the
VTEC changeover is much more pronounced. But then DC2/ATR and early VTEC units are known for being like flicking a switch when the 2nd lobe kicks in.

I prefer the smooth power delivery on the S and the last thing you want (especially in the wet!) is a huge dollop of power coming in at high revs and unsettling the car

Isn't the OEM DC2 map done with a torque drop just before VTEC engagement to give an artificial kick at the changeover. Tuners can map this out on a DC2 with programable ECU. The S2000 doesn't have this.
