Default S2000 vs Mini Cooper S = Close ?

Had a fun drive this morning, my usual route, my usual speed. This morning though I had a black Mini One Cooper S behind me and it was suprisingly close. Pulled a little on him up hill but really there wasn't much in it, even up to 125 (kph), though it did look a bit of a handful on a roundabout on which I was well within the S2000s grip limits.

Now either my S is down on power or his Mini was tweaked - just noticed that there are some readilly available 220BHP kits out there, so don't expect to blow these (not so) little cars away.

Still, the driver gave me a toot and a wave as I turned off. Fun way to start the day

EVO Mag did a comparison with various tuned MINI Cooper S's....the Works conversion offered by BMW themselves makes the Cooper S a quick motor

My brother has a Cooper S and it is a quick little motor indeed. Round the twisties it sticks like hell and I find that I can chuck it about with a lot more confidence than I can in the S (This may be down to my own driving abilities in the S though). On the straights though there is no contest, the extra 70bhp seems to be enough to keep infront.

I'd love to see how the Works kit compares though.

A friend of mine has the Mini Super Sport, we took both cars out for a spin on some good B roads, the mini held well. Its a very nippy car but the ride is not smooth at all, the suspension is as hard as a TVR.

My buddy has the cooper S and it is very quick ... even without the Hartage upgrade. The standard model Cooper S will reach 60 in 7.4 which is a full 1.4 seconds slower than the S, but alot can happen in 1.4 seconds and it only takes a heavy foot to nullify that advantage. The top speed is 135 Vs 155 on the S.

Excellent car ..... my buddies was

Auto express rate the S2000 as follows

0-60 - 6.2 ????
Top Speed - 150 ?????

Is that correct ? I thought it was 6 and 155 ??? It is Auto express after all

Of course, I did have the top down which must cost quite a bit of acceleration at high speeds.

He didn't have that options

Does it really matter if one car magazine quotes the dash to 60 and the top speed slightly wrong (or right - who knows !!)

If they change it to 6 seconds flat will it improve your life, or indeed make your S2000 faster on the road ?? !!

S2K HTY - 6.2 and 150 are the manufacturers figures IIRC.

Nearly all those that have tested it have it at 5.5 or so and the top speed is irrelevant but in the region on 150. I've had 156mph and still pulling but not sure how accurate the speedo is at that speed.

Lotusman - Nope .... really dont care but I think the topic of the debate was the performance of the Cooper S Vs JoNem's S2000.

As for the car mags ... they have rules of their own. Thank for the comments Dracoro.

Oh and regardless of the 0-60 both cars are great fun, although very different is terms of who they are aimed at.
