S2000 Questions do different revs differ majorly?
Hi there
Right am looking for an S2000 to accompany my Mustang.
At the moment I am in two minds.
1. I spend circa 7k on say an 00-02 car and maybe spend a little adding some basic improvements like AEM V2, exhaust, uprated ARBS and any other recommendations.
2. I spend circa 11k on an 04/05 car, again add AEM V2 and exhaust.
Now apart from the fact 04 cars seem to look nicer and are nicer on the inside when it comes to handling ability, driveability and performance do the different revisions differ, am I right in thinking there is 3 or 4 revisions?
I've heard people say the 04 onwards cars drive so much better and most putting it down to the larger wheels, is this true?
Basically could one say buy a year 2000 car with 04 wheels and would it handle and drive the same as an 04/05 or does the 04 onwards have other suspension mods etc.
Or are they all the same suspension wise and the only difference is just GEO setup, which would mean you could put an 04 GEO onto an 00 which would mean it drove the same?
Sorry for what might seem like dumb question just want to weigh up my options. I shall also aim to test drive say a 2002 and a 2004 car to see how they differ, but apart from different wheel size is there any other differences that make one handle worse/better than the other?
Then what are the best bang for buck modifications to improve handling, especially if one was doing the odd track day?

Besides changes in colour options these are the model changes;
Mk1 99-01 the original and hardcore version apparently wink.gif
Mk2 02-03 revised dampers and springs, glass rear screen, leather and a few other cosmetics (alloys, gearknob, console cover, trim to rear of headrest)
Mk3 04-05 Significant suspension revisions and facelift, retained the F20C but improved oil consumption (some how!) vtec transition smoother, dash display & clock, cosmetics (alloys, new centre console & radio door in silver, no black tape round windscreen, colour coded HID washers)
Mk4 +06 Drive by wire (DBW) introduced to allow fitment of traction control (VSA), minor dash display changes & outside temp, cosmetics (seat covers change and there is no hole in the headrest, roll hoops speakers, console in black & radio door cover in gunmetal)
Mk5 +08 VSA as standard, changes to springs & roll bars, different alloys, GT100 Limited Editions

05 is the newest model you can FI easily as anything after is DBW, if this tickles your fancy but having your Stang I imagine you're not looking to go into the S2000 for the power

Anything from 03 -07 gets progressively softer and rollier rear end handling.
The 07 being the softest.
The 08/09 models hark back to the 99-01 settings.
Springs/ dampers/ Antiroll bar thickness being the main difference
Geo settings can be done the same on any car.
The 06+ cars have an electronic throttle.
04+ cars had a refresh to the dashboard display.
That's really about it.
There is a buying guide and erm a detailed FAQ manual on this site.
Also research into "seized bushes". This can cost up to

Thanks for that awsome and all is explained, so when it comes to handling and driving they are all same and older models are a bit more rawer and lighter.
So that makes an 2002-2003 car favourite then.
Question though, I have heard the car drives so much better on the 17" wheels that came on the 04 and newer cars, is this true?

DBW is contentious
Some say it makes the car less "raw"
Others say it improves the throttle response
Others say it reduces the throttle response.
WHat is agreed upon - is that if you wish to go forced induction a DBW car is not a good starting point.

You may like to PM Oxhauser or BSM139 as they have both recently changed from OEM 16's to OEM 17's.
AFAIK there is a much better selection of tyres for the 17's in the sizes suitable for the S and this is as big a driver for change as the astetics. I'm fairly sure I've heard comments to the effect that the 17's dull turn in a little but also make the rear slightly more progressive, but please don'ty take my word for it, I still have 16's (planning to change when I have the money).
