The MY99-MY01 is the original S. It's lighter, sharper and as Honda wanted it to be. The widow maker
Subsequent models are a compromise i.e. they moved away from their original brief. If the car ever becomes a classic it will be the earlier models that will attain that status - if there are any left.
That said, the glass rear screen, the 17" wheels and a hardtop are desirables that come as standard with MY04+ models. The suspension is also meant to be softer and it has a better stereo system. Of course, these can all be retro fitted to the MY99-01.
At the end of the day it depends on your budget.

Is anyone else on here finding all of the recent 'widow maker' and 'if there are any left' comments rather OTT?
Surely 99.9% of these 'accidents' that occur are caused by either lack of ability/experience of rwd, old worn tyres, geo like a banana or wet roads?

I've had three of the five "versions" including the "original", a DBW/VSA and a GT car.
For a daily drive I would suggest a +06 car with VSA
For max modding potential in a daily drive 04/05 with out the DBW
Don't bother with a GT
From my experience of four of them

Most accidents are the nut behind the handle
Each model year is also a different compromise
I never quite "got" any of the 4 I owned and ended up modding mine.
Now I alot!
But it is not much like a standard car - in many respects

Modding a MY06+ is only difficult if you want to add forced induction as no one has developed a solution that works with the Drive By Wire throttle.
There is a working solution. (As of last week)
And it is British.

good advice guys, but what is DBW/VSA?
VSA = Vehicle Stability Assist - The same as ESP etc etc.
Some trick electronics that stop you from being a ham fisted buffoon and spinning the car into a ditch and setting it on fire.
