Smile S2000 diesel or spark plug failure

Well last night I got a loss of power and a bad missfire.

As I slowed down ( from the speed limit !) a very audible noise became apparent. Bollox !

I was not far from home so I just pressed on. No1 spark plug removed and didnt look good, the tip of the plug had snapped off.

The tip has probably dropped into the bore and is probably stuck in between the piston and the cylinder wall. Making it sound like a S2000 diesel. Isn't it so bloody irritating that something like a little piece of a spark plug can totally destroy months of tweaking my turbo project.

Head gasket set ordered hopefully i can get away with a rebuilt head and changing No1 piston out. Ill see tonight if I get time to do an autopsy on the poor old engine.

Any ideas on where to get replacement head bolts from quickly (aside from the stealers) or can the head bolts be reused?

Unlikely to have got between the cylinder bore and wall. More likely just to have just launched it out of the exhaust valves. Fortunately light piece of material so shouldn't have done too much damage (I had a very similar failure to mine and 3 months later running no issues)

Ouch.

Guess you didn't put new ones in before the turbo?

Have you tried a new plug?

If the broken bit of plug is stuck between the piston and the bore then the bore is already trashed and you lose nothing by trying a new plug.

The engine will sound like a diesel if its only running on 3 cylinders due to the failed plug.

Lings Honda in Suffolk were very good with spares for the S and offer delivery!

Generally speaking, I thought head bolts were single-use items, due to them stretching a little???

Good luck with the rebuild!

Not necissarily. The ones we use (from memory) can theoretically be reused upto 10 times. Practically we only reuse them once though due to how we control the useage method (paint mark them after removing the first time.

A mate of mine had a very similar issue only a month or so ago. He change all the plugs (to be on the safe side) and his engine is still running.

It's the first thing I'd do.

Have it examined by borescope before you have the head off or are you that sure it's fecked.

I agree, new plug then borescope if it's still sounding poorly. Fingers crossed.

Hopefully the bit of plug is just burnt away!
