Yep, I still own an Audi S3 and it has been an up and down experience!
It is NOT just the 1.8T engine that is affected, the 3.2 / 3.0 and many others are/were also affected.
The S3 IMO is a far better car than the A3 3.2 V6 IMO.
WHY: Its an S! Its better value for money, has got more extras (as standard) it has got full electric Silk Nappa Leather Recaro seats (the A3 HAS NOT), it has tuning potential (up to 280bhp), it is lighter and has more performance with a more econmical engine. The alloys are nicer!
If you are certain that you want an S3 try and buy a loaded 03 model with 18" RSTT alloys, BOSE, heated seats and Full colour TV/Sat Nav. IMO Imola yellow is best. Make sure the coilpacks have ALL been changed to the most recent release.
Right down to business.
Audi S3 Pro's
Great Interior, seats, 4WD, performance, value for money, classy, resale value, tuning potential
Audi S3 Con's
Heavy, causing understeer, reliability issues (as with all Audi's), servicing costs are high - on avg

[EDIT] I only just noticed that you are after a A3 3.2 V6 and not the S3. I should read properly! Get an R32 instead
I forgot to add that I think you will be disappointed going from and S2000 to an S3 / A3 3.2, I did the opposite (S3 is the gf's now) and I don't enjoy driving the S3 so much as its not as good fun.

I agree with Moff. My old Leon Cupra R was remapped to 280 Bhp and 290 ft/lb torque and after driving an S for the first time I was like WOW !!!
Instanltly lost interest in the Leon and had to get me a an S2000.
So far, I have found nothing that I like as much. Test drives inc STI PPP, EVO FQ300, Supra Twin Turbo (blitz version), Z4 3.0, Porsche Permster S and the VX220 turbo.
Admittedly these are some serious machines but just doesn't have the wow factor of the S. I never got out of any and that I have to have that. The S is so unique. Best four pot engine, gorgeous looking, 9k rpm's and convertible to boot.
