Default The S as the only car for a single person

Most if you will know now that The Man and I separated a few months ago.
We are still in the process of separating our assets and it is all amicable I must re-assure you.

I have a Ford Fiesta Zetec: practical, cheap, I enjoy throwing it around and it forgives me
He has the S: no need to explain.

I have been saying that he must keep the S as it is a car that would take me beyond my means. However, he is struggling with having the S as an everyday car, doing a lot of business miles and a lot of traffic jams, a lot of driving in an advanced state of tiredness. He is thinking of selling it if he keeps it.

Having had it this week and having fallen in love with it again (for those that are falling out of love with theirs ) . I am so tempted in buying my half of it from him and keeping it. I currently only drive approximately 6000 miles per year but then as my life has changed I don't know how this may change.

Advantages:
I would acquire a nice car, well kept, I know its history..etc for a very good price.
I love every minute of driving it.

Disadvantages:
Much more expensive to keep on the road.
Boot space especially as I am about to embark on selling the house and setting up my own place.

Any opinions on single life with the S as your only car?

Thanks.

Edit: don't you start saying you cannot compare the Fiesta and the S. I know. It is just the choice I am facing.

Do it! As long as the finances allow. I've run the S as my only car for 36k miles in 2 1/2 years.

Works for me, but then I've always only had one car so don't really have anything to compare to.

The largest car I've owned (internal space wise) in the last 10 years is a Citroen AX.

For how often I move house or move furnature, I get a hire van.

But then I'm a bloke and can go away for a week with only a toothbrush and a pair of pants.

As soon as I split up with my girlfriend the S is the first thing I bought. Practicality went straight out the window.

Granted, it costs a lot more to run than my last car, but I save money in other areas to compensate. Go for it.

It's my only car, but I am married and my wife does drive a larger car (330 cab).

Problems come when:

- You want to go on holiday - large suitcases
Solution - Use a taxi or get a lift

- You want to buy large objects
Solution - pay a little extra and get them delivered or buy off the internet

- You need to take more than 1 passenger
Solution - make them drive! or hire a small car as a one off

Overall, as you will already know boot space is actually good, and instead of using suitcases, soft bags are easier.

The S doesn't have excessive running costs, with 28mpg when driven sympathetically and the tyres are always good fo 15-20k too (S02's have a much shorter life on pre 04 cars).

I say take the S... give it 6 months and see how it goes. Sell it if you can't afford to run it or if if proves impractical.

Someone call me?

As it was only me, I bought the S2000, its got enough space for one person to throw weekend gear in and head into the hills without having crap on the front seat and worrying about leaving anything behind!

*Erases image of someone brushing down their only pair of pants with a toothbrush*
:shudder:

Back at the ranch... I'd say do it. The running costs of the S are fine unless you thrash it everywhere and eat tyres on a weekly basis. If you are worried about the odd bit of extra luggage then get a boot rack. Perfect for going on holiday (unload when you get there and the car is secure again)

I have the S as my only car, go on business trips and off to the South of France, Le Mans etc and survive quite happily. I agree that moving house etc is just sooooo much easier in a hired van - no need to worry about scuffing the interior of the S etc etc

I must also confess that I'm now single after a while of domesticity and as a result I have already addressed these questions in person. Think of me as your guinea pig!

The S will work, it's a beautiful car to drive and behold and the value holds up much better than a Fiesta Keep the S and you won't regret it!

Oh, and it'll probably be good for attracting toy boys too...
