Mine are supposed to be stainless steel, although the front, larger mesh discoloured after 6months - the side ones only ever suffer from stone or suicidal fly impact damage. I think the heat from the radiator effects it too.

I remove them every 4 months or so, scrub them with wire wool, then apply 6-7 coats of hammerite smooth silver spray - seems to do the trick

The zinc coating should work even if it is chipped since it has a higher potential than iron! i.e. it will preferentially corrode to the iron. Only when the zinc is exposed and has totally corroded away will the iron start to rust (in theory).

This is used on ships were they basically weld a bit of zinc to the hull and replace it when its corroded away, this stops the hull from corroding away! I think thats what my lecturer told me anyway!!!

How do I get this off? I there a spray i can protect them with I am not about to take them off as it was a nightmare getting them on

The only comment I can make Marc (and not that it will be any use to you) is that its better for the grilles to have chipped and rusted, than that stone to have damaged your radiator.

I`d destroy your currents and buy a new set, view it as a yearly (40 quid) insurance against a multiple hundreds rad replacement.

Also, if you have time, dig out Tonky`s DIY solution and make your own from what you want, ie some better mesh from HellFrauds.

I think you are right Col, worst case is you have to buy new grills every year. Anyway some nice diamondy ones are crossing the Atlantic as we speak
