Road Tax Question
In terms of which tax band the car falls into, is the 'date of registration' refering to the date of FIRST registration or of UK registration?

No, but it's common sense really...
your car has been previously registered elsewhere right, so thats the "first registration date" not the date it was imported...
otherwise, your car would have an 06 plate, which it doesn't right?

You would think so but woman on DVLA helpline went for the UK reg date. I would believe her but she sounded uncertain, and works for DVLA and is therefore untrustworthy

It will definately be taxed as per the first reg date. I have lived in Jersey for the past 25 years and recently moved to UK (bringing my car with me). In the old days you used to be able to register the car on the new plates when bought into the UK (regardless of its age) but they got wise to that. Shame as this meant re-sale values if you exported to UK were great - although tended to confuse people!
Now your V5 should show the first EVER date of registration. Which means its it tax band is worked out from first reg date. No question about it - so consider

The reason 2001 and March 2006 are key dates as that is the key dates for the banding. Pre 2001 there were not the A-F bands and pre March 2006 there was no band G. If they bring in new bands they cannot penalise existing owners. However they can raise the amount charged within the band.
For those of you too lazy to work it out. Pre 2001 the most you pay is

FFS been onto the DVLA again and been assured that they have quoted me correct and its the date of first UK registration. When pushed for an explanation as to why this is the case they told me some bull about it being when the emissions test was first performed. However it was not inspected on import, I got a certificate of conformity from Honda UK so it doesn't stack up. They can't provide any written confirmation about this and have told me to write a letter in if I want to contest it. Bliddy Welsh!
Any ideas how to take this forward?
