The mechanic was saying something about pressure in bearings - is it likely it's more than just the diff - does that mean anything to anyone?
The diff contains a number of bearings.

I suspect you are being quoted for replacing the bearings in the diff which could be quite a time consuming job.

Replacing the diff should take no more than an hour but it is common for the bolts that connect the drive shaft to the diff to snap. I think 2 were snapped when my diff was replaced. I think I still have a spare bolt at home.

Thanks Steven that makes sense.

I've actually just rung Honda. I really didn't want to go through them but to find out if the warranty will cover I probably need to.

I'm seriously doubtful that they will cover it but at least now I know it won't cost me

Sorry Steven, I'm guessing I will probably still need yours but I should know by tomorrow (and pick up sat if that's ok). Don't want to mess you around.
Carrie, nothing to worry about. If you don't need the diff I know someone else that would like to have it as a spare.

I've overhauled a diff back in my mechanic days. And it's a job I'd never want to do again. I'd imagine that most mechanics will say an extortionate amount to do the job just to get the customer to go elsewhere. Swapping a diff over though isn't such a big deal. Especially if you have the car on a ramp.

What are you people doing to your cars to go through diffs like this though?
I thought the diff should last the life of the car?

So why would you do that rather than just replace the whole lot??

I'm hoping Honda think the same about the life of the diff and just replace it for me

Most people swap the diff to change the final drive ratio.
